Story
Capitán Miranda
State under sails
The Capitán Miranda, launched in Spain in 1930, began her career as a cargo vessel. She is named after Captain Francisco Miranda (1868-1925), a distinguished Uruguayan hydrographer who served as a cabinet officer, war secretary, and professor of marine geography at the Naval Academy of Uruguay. Originally used as a hydrographic survey ship, Capitán Miranda served in this role until 1978. Following a major refit, she was transformed into a sail training vessel.
As a training ship for the Uruguayan Navy, Capitán Miranda embodies the spirit of a "State under Sails," spreading a message of peace and friendship from Uruguay to the world.
In 1987, Capitán Miranda etched her name in history by becoming the first Uruguayan Navy vessel to complete a round-the-world voyage during her eighth instructional journey. This achievement cemented her legacy as a symbol of Uruguayan maritime pride and a vessel of international goodwill.
