Largest Sailing Ship from Latin America Coming to Amsterdam for the First Time!

Amsterdam, October 5, 2023 - From August 20-24, 2025, ships from around the world will come to our capital for the 10th time. Since Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary that year, it also marks 50 years of SAIL tradition. The first edition was organized to celebrate the city’s 700th anniversary. This triple jubilee will be celebrated with ships, cultures, and visitors from all over the world! With a real first: the B.A.P. Unión from Peru, one of the largest traditional sailing ships in the world, will come to the largest freely accessible event in Europe for the first time. Together with all partners, participants, and talents who make #SAIL2025 possible, they are the 'wavemakers' of #SAIL2025!

Already, organizations like Booking.com, Port of Amsterdam, Koninklijke Marine, Het Scheepvaartmuseum, ROC van Amsterdam & Flevoland, and Hogeschool Inholland have committed to participating. In the presence of Mayor Halsema, the first outlines of #SAIL2025 were shared with these initial partners. “SAIL is a key event in many calendars, where we welcome ships and cultures from around the world to our city. It’s a time to learn from history and look forward to future innovation. It is therefore a festive highlight during our city’s 750th anniversary: I look forward to leading the SAIL-In, sailing into Amsterdam together!”, said the mayor.

#SAIL2025 is special for several reasons: for the first time in 10 years, the ships return for the largest freely accessible event in Europe. The 10th edition was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. A new generation will be introduced to SAIL, where inspiring and innovative pioneers, known as wavemakers, will have the chance to share their stories with a million-strong audience! Chairman Arie Jan de Waard: “We haven’t forgotten 2020: from the long-standing friendships with (inter)national ships and crews, we are creating the lineup for 2025. The same goes for the partners from 2020: in the coming months, we will contact them to set the course for the jubilee edition. So as many wavemakers as possible can reach a millions-strong audience at #SAIL2025. And on August 20, 2025, led by our flagship the Clipper Stad Amsterdam, we will sail into our birthday city!”.
