A rich history
Le Phoenix is a large square-rigged sailing ship, 34 meters long. It was built as a sailing cargo ship in 1929 by Hjorne and Jakobsen in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Instead of following traditional trade routes, the ship served for 20 years as an evangelical missionary schooner before being repurposed for freight transport. After a change of ownership, it was converted once again, this time to serve as a film star.
Hello, Megastar!
Chances are you've seen Le Phoenix on the big screen. It has starred in numerous films and TV series, earning an excellent reputation in the film industry. Recent productions in which it appeared include "In the Heart of the Sea", "Poldark", "Taboo", and "Frontier".
In 1991, Le Phoenix was converted into a 15th-century caravel, the Santa Maria, for Ridley Scott’s film "1492: Conquest of Paradise".
In 1996, the ship was adapted into a brig and served as a set for productions such as "Hornblower Series", "Captain Sabretooth", "Voyage of Discovery", "Moll Flanders", "Frenchman’s Creek", "The Scarlet Pimpernel", and "Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader".
Curious about more recent titles? Since 2017, Le Phoenix has appeared in "In the Heart of the Sea", "Poldark" (all seasons), "Taboo", "Frontier", "Outlander", and "Napoleon".
