Story
Etoile du Roy
Film star
This beautiful replica was built in 1996 as ‘Grand Turk’ in Marmaris – Turkey, for the recordings of the English series ‘Horatio Hornblower’, about one of England’s great naval heroes. The recordings lasted from 1998 to 2003. After that she still played in a number of other English films and television series.
In 2010 she was sold to France, after which her name was changed to ‘Etoile du Roy’. With this owner – Etoile Marines Croisieres from St. Malo – she is part of a larger fleet of historical replicas.
The ship is unique both on the outside and on the inside, with a beautiful historic reception room for the captain, high-gloss varnished woodwork and an impressive window section. Built as a replica of an English frigate from 1745, it also has guns on board that can actually shoot. The crew is usually dressed as in 1745 and with her special appearance she is regularly asked in films, for example in the Netherlands!
In the recent film adaptation of the life of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, the Etoile du Roy plays a leading role besides – of course – the Admiral.
